11th Congress of the International Society for Ethnopharmacology

Highlights of the programme:

ISE 2010 (21.09. – 25.09.): The ISE’s first congress took place about 20 years ago (Strasbourg 1990). In 2009, the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, the official journal of the International Society for Ethnopharmacology (ISE) celebrated its 30th anniversary and over the last decades ethnopharmacology has developed into a kaleidoscope of research on human’s use of plants and other organisms as medicine, food and toxins. Several generations of ethnopharmacological researchers with diverse backgrounds and interests have shaped the field and today it certainly is a fast developing and flourishing area of academic and applied research.
While some decades ago we focused on what we considered ‘traditional knowledge’, there now is an increasing focus on the dynamics of knowledge. Similarly, the last decades have made us increasingly aware how crucial the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity is and that there is an intrinsic link between biological and cultural diversity. In a globalised world local and traditional knowledge is under ever more pressure. Ideas taken from traditional knowledge systems continue to be an important source of inspiration in drug development and at the same time ‘new’ food supplements and herbal remedies as well as ‘cosmeceuticals’ from ‘traditional societies‘ enter the market at an ever increasing rate.  Our 11th congress will address these dynamics and will offer a unique opportunity to present ethnopharmacological work and to discuss the wider implications of our research.
For the very first time, we are also planning events for younger researchers in the field. We would like to invite you to contribute to this event and to share your experiences with the scholarly community. We are also planning a series of events for youngers researches in the field.
This congress will be held simultaneously with the Ier Encuentro Hispano Portugés de Etnobiología

Specific Topics:

The main themes of the congress are:

  • Ethnopharmacology and biocultural diversity
  • Circum-Mediterranean ethnopharmacology / ethnobotany and its exchange with the Americas
  • From traditional remedies to modern medicines – phytochemical, pharmacological and clinical studies
  • Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and their role in ethnopharmacology
  • The interface between history and ethnopharmacology
  • The interface of medicine and food plants

Various symposia including one organised by young ethnopharmacologists.

This congress will be held in memoriam of Prof. Nina Etkin (13.06.1948 - † 27.01.2009):

At the meeting we will commemorate her life and work. Prof. Nina Etkin, former president of the ISE and well known researcher with a special interest in the interface between food and medicine.
